Video Doorbell Installation Done Once, Properly
A video doorbell looks like a fifteen-minute job until you take the old one off the wall. Behind it you usually find two bare low-voltage wires, a transformer buried in a closet or attic that nobody has looked at since the house was built, and a chime that may or may not tolerate the doorbell you just bought. That is where most DIY installs stop, and it is where most of our doorbell calls come from.

The Wiring Is the Part That Goes Wrong
Most video doorbells want 16 to 24 volts AC at around 30VA. Plenty of older Brevard homes were built with a 10VA transformer, which was fine for a chime that rang for two seconds and did nothing else. Put a camera, a speaker and a Wi-Fi radio on that same transformer and it browns out. The symptoms look like a bad doorbell: it reboots when someone rings, the video drops, notifications arrive late or not at all.
We check the transformer before we start. If it is undersized we replace it, and if there is no doorbell wiring at all we run new low-voltage cable from a suitable power source. That is ordinary work for us because running low-voltage cable through finished walls is what we do every day on cabling and camera jobs.

Front Door Wi-Fi Is Usually the Real Culprit
Your front door is typically the furthest point from the router, behind an exterior wall, and often around a corner from the nearest access point. A doorbell with two bars will technically connect and will technically record, but the notification lands after the delivery driver has already left and the live view stalls when you open it.
Because networking is our day job rather than a sideline, we test signal strength at the door before mounting anything. If it is marginal we fix it properly with a mesh node or a dedicated access point instead of hoping it holds. It is the difference between a doorbell you trust and one you stop opening.
Ring, Nest, or UniFi: An Honest Comparison
We install all of them, so we have no reason to push you toward one. The right answer depends on what you already own and whether you mind a subscription.
- Ring is the easiest to live with, has the widest accessory range and the most familiar app. Recording and smart alerts sit behind a monthly plan.
- Nest is the better fit if your home already runs on Google. On-device detection is strong and it tells you what it saw, not just that something moved. Also subscription based for full history.
- UniFi costs more up front and records locally to your own NVR with no monthly fee, ever. It is the one to choose if you want the doorbell to be part of a proper camera system rather than a standalone gadget.
- Eufy sits in between, with local storage on the device and no required subscription, though the ecosystem is smaller.
If you already bought one, we will fit it properly rather than talk you out of it. If you have not bought yet and want the doorbell to tie into cameras covering the rest of the property, that conversation is worth having before you order.
Video Doorbell Installation Questions
Do I need existing doorbell wiring?
No. If you have existing doorbell wiring we will use it, which gives you continuous power and no batteries to change. If you do not, we can either install a battery-powered unit or run new low-voltage wiring and add a transformer. We check what you have before quoting so there are no surprises on install day.
Will a video doorbell work with my existing chime?
Usually, but it depends on the chime. Mechanical chimes generally work with a bypass module, and digital chimes often need a specific kit or a power adapter. Older Brevard homes frequently have a 10VA transformer, while most video doorbells want 16 to 24 volts AC at 30VA. If yours is undersized we will tell you before we start rather than leaving you with a doorbell that reboots every time someone rings it.
My Wi-Fi barely reaches the front door. Is that a problem?
It is the single most common reason a video doorbell disappoints. The front door is usually the far edge of a home network, behind an exterior wall, and a weak signal means delayed notifications and choppy video. We test signal at the door before installing, and because we do networking as our day job we can fix the coverage properly with a mesh node or an access point instead of hoping it holds.
Should I get a Ring, a Nest, or something else?
Ring is the easiest to live with and has the widest accessory support. Nest integrates best if you already run Google Home and has strong on-device detection. UniFi costs more up front but records locally with no monthly fee and matches the camera systems we install. We install all three. If you have already bought one, we will fit it properly rather than talk you into something else.
Can you install a doorbell I already bought?
Yes, and a lot of our doorbell work is exactly that. People buy one, open the box, find bare wires and a transformer in the closet, and stop. Bring us the unit you already own and we will handle the wiring, the chime, the mounting angle and the app setup.
How long does it take?
A straightforward swap on existing wiring is usually under an hour. Adding a transformer, running new wire, or fixing Wi-Fi coverage at the door takes longer. We give you a firm answer once we have seen the wiring rather than quoting a number that changes halfway through.
