Can You Use Existing Coax for Home Internet? Modernizing an Older Brevard County Home Network

Older Brevard County homes came wired for phone and cable TV, not gigabit internet. Here is what you can reuse, what has to be pulled, and how MoCA turns existing coax into a fast wired network.

If your house was built in Brevard County between about 1995 and 2010, there is a good chance it came with what the builder called structured wiring. A metal panel in the hall closet, a bundle of coax running to every bedroom, maybe a run or two of Cat5e, and a phone jack in the kitchen nobody has used in fifteen years. Then Wi-Fi got popular, the internet got fast, and all of that stopped being a selling point.

The question we get in older Suntree homes and along Rockledge Drive is always the same. Do we have to tear the walls open to get a modern network, or can we use what is already in there? The honest answer is that you can reuse more than you think, and the parts you cannot reuse are usually fewer than you fear.

What You Can Actually Reuse in an Older Brevard Home

Before anyone quotes you a full rewire, someone should open that panel and look. Here is roughly how it breaks down in the homes we see across Melbourne, Rockledge, and Titusville.

  • Coax (RG6): almost always reusable, and more useful now than it was when it was installed. This is the backbone of a MoCA upgrade.
  • Cat5e: usually fine. Cat5e carries gigabit over the distances found in a typical single-family home. If it terminates cleanly and tests good, leave it alone.
  • Cat3 or four-pair phone wire: dead weight. It cannot carry modern data and is not worth re-terminating.
  • The builder panel itself: the enclosure stays, the guts usually go. Those passive splitters and phone blocks are what is throttling you.
  • Old exterior runs: inspect before you trust. Florida sun and humidity are hard on jacketing, and a run that has been baking in a west-facing soffit since 2003 often tests poorly.

Cat5e is rarely the weak link. The weak link is almost always the panel, the splitters, and a router sitting in a closet behind a metal door.

Turning Coax Into Gigabit With MoCA

This is the trick that saves older Brevard homes from a rewire. MoCA, short for Multimedia over Coax Alliance, puts a high-speed Ethernet signal over the coax cable already in your walls. You put an adapter at the panel and another at the far end, and the coax jack in the back bedroom becomes a wired network port.

Current MoCA gear delivers around 2.5 Gbps of shared bandwidth, which is more than almost any Brevard home is pulling from the street. It is genuinely fast, it is stable, and it does not care about stucco, foil-backed insulation, or the concrete block that makes Wi-Fi miserable in so many Florida houses.

  • Feeding a wireless access point in a far bedroom or a detached office without pulling new cable
  • Hardwiring a home office in a 1990s two-story where the router lives on the wrong floor
  • Getting a solid connection to a Florida room or converted garage that Wi-Fi has never reached
  • Connecting a streaming setup or game console that stutters on wireless every evening

The catch is that MoCA needs a filter at the point where coax enters the house, and the existing splitters usually have to be swapped for MoCA-rated ones. That is a fifteen minute job for someone who has done it and a frustrating afternoon for someone who has not.

Retiring the Hall Closet Panel

Most of the modernization work happens right there in that closet. The enclosure was designed for phone and cable TV, not for a network, and it shows. There is rarely a proper outlet inside, no ventilation to speak of, and a metal door that blocks the very Wi-Fi signal the router is trying to broadcast.

A sensible rebuild looks like this. The router moves out of the metal box and into open air. A small managed switch goes in the panel and everything that used to dead-end at a splitter gets terminated into it. Any Cat5e that tests clean gets punched down properly instead of being crimped into a wall jack by whoever finished the house. And the Wi-Fi stops coming from a closet and starts coming from ceiling-mounted access points placed where people actually sit.

Adding PoE Without Opening Every Wall

Once the panel is a real network instead of a splitter box, Power over Ethernet becomes possible, and that is what makes cameras and ceiling access points practical in an older home. PoE sends power and data down a single Cat5e or Cat6 run, so an access point in the hallway ceiling or a camera under the eave needs one cable and no electrician.

Snowbird season picks up in late October, and the difference between scheduling network work in September and scheduling it in December is about four weeks of lead time. There is also a practical reason to do it while the house is empty. Most whole-home modernizations are a one to two day job in an empty house and considerably longer in an occupied one.
